ALCOHOL METABOLISM

ALCOHOL METABOLISM

Alcohol metabolism refers to the process by which the human body breaks down and eliminates alcohol (ethanol) after it is consumed.

Here’s a simplified overview of the alcohol metabolism process:

  • 1. Absorption: After consumption, alcohol is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream primarily through the walls of the stomach and small intestine.
  • 2. Distribution: Once in the bloodstream, alcohol is distributed throughout the body, affecting various organs and tissues.
  • 3. Metabolism: The majority of alcohol metabolism occurs in the liver, where enzymes break down ethanol into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound. This process primarily involves two enzymes:
    • a. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH): Converts alcohol into acetaldehyde.
    • b. Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH): Converts acetaldehyde into acetate, which is further metabolized into carbon dioxide and water.
  • 4. Elimination: Acetate, the final product of alcohol metabolism, which is eventually excreted as carbon dioxide and water. Small percentage of alcohol is eliminated from the body through urine, sweat, and breath.

The rate of alcohol metabolism varies among individuals and can be influenced by factors such as genetics, age, sex, body weight, liver health, and the presence of certain medications or substances.

It’s important to note that while the body metabolizes alcohol at a fairly constant rate, excessive alcohol consumption can overwhelm the liver’s capacity to metabolize it, leading to a buildup of acetaldehyde and other harmful byproducts, which can cause various health issues, including liver damage, impaired cognitive function, and increased risk of accidents and injuries.
